Your Buyers Are Changing. Are Your Floor Plans Keeping Up?

Think about how much the way people live at home has changed.

More people work from home. Adult children stay longer. Aging parents move in. Storage expectations have grown, and outdoor spaces increasingly function as another room. These changes often happen gradually, but over time, they can reshape what buyers expect from a new home.

Then there are the production home design trends we hear about every year—larger pantries, dual primary suites, flex rooms, prep kitchens and wellness spaces.

The tricky part is determining which trends reflect lasting changes in home buyer preferences and which ones will quickly pass.

You probably don’t want to redesign a successful product line every time a new housing trend appears!

Start With Your Own Buyers

We think your buyers are a better source of product intelligence than any trend report.

What are they consistently asking your sales team?

Which options are they buying?

What changes keep appearing?

Where are they hesitating?

If you hear something once, it may just be a preference. But if you hear it twenty times, it’s worth finding out why.

Look at How People Live, Not Only How Homes Look

Looking at how buyers actually live is often the best way to separate a lasting shift from a passing design trend.

Multigenerational living is a good example.

If buyers increasingly need space for an aging parent, adult child or extended family member, that can affect privacy, bathroom access, bedroom location and even the need for a separate living area or entrance.

That’s a product decision, not a decorating trend.

The same thinking applies to working from home, storage, outdoor living and flexible spaces. Each can influence how your production home floor plans function - and how well they meet the needs of today’s buyers.

Know When Your Product Line Needs to Evolve

You don’t need to chase every trend. But you do want to recognize the changes your own buyers are telling you matter.
